The Santa Cruz Heckler was discontinued after 18 years of raising hell on the trail. Its final form was as a durable aluminum enduro bike for those looking to ride without worry all year long. The Heckler is back to raise some hell as a 160 mm travel pedal-assist mountain bike. The 2021 Santa Cruz Heckler CC manages to be lighter than the competition and features impressive integration, long-distance capability, and all of the performance of the best Santa Cruz mountain bikes.
As with before, the Heckler finds itself borrowing from the Bronson. This starts with Santa Cruz’s lower-link mounted shock configuration and VPP kinematics. Found on just about every other Santa Cruz around, this suspension promises a supportive mid-stroke, smooth bottom out, and just-right damping through rocky descents. This is paired to a stout C-grade carbon frame and rear swingarm with low standover clearance, excellent dropper post clearance. Out back there are also ISCG 05 tabs, a molded chainstay protector that matches the bottom bracket and downtube protectors, and clearance for up to a 27.5 x 2.8” plus tire.
The name of the game with the Heckler is its Shimano STEPS E8000 Class 1 drive unit. It offers 250 W power, 70 Nm torque, a color display, and a 504 Wh battery neatly tucked into the downtube. Power delivery is smooth, and the bike is overall very lightweight for an eMTB that offers all-day rideability.
The Santa Cruz Heckler is available in five sizes (SM-XXL) and four build kits.
The Heckler CC – XT Kit is for those Shimano lovers out there! Equipped with the Shimano XT 12 speed groupset with Shimano Ep8000 Drive Unit and 504 watt hour battery. Suspension is a 160 mm FOX 36 Float Performance fork and Rockshox Super Deluxe Select+ shock. RaceFace ARC HD 30 rims laced onto SDT Swiss 370 hubs. This build includes a Fox Transfer Performance Elite Dropper post and Maxxis Minion DHR 27.5 x 2.6″ tires.
